I photograph things that make me stop.

A quiet landscape. A bird alone in an open space. A person passing through.

Sometimes I understand why I'm drawn to something immediately. Other times I don't understand it until I see the photograph later.

I've learned to trust that instinct.

The photograph is only part of the story.

The title is part of the work. It may offer another way into the image, but it isn't meant to tell you what to see or how to feel.

Time. Solitude. Impermanence. Mortality. Our place in the natural world.

These ideas keep finding their way into my photographs.

We are all passing through.

Most of us will leave no permanent mark.

I don't find that depressing.

I find freedom in it.

The photograph is simply my way of noticing while I'm here.
